Washington-The US Senate December 13 easily secured the votes needed to open debate on an extensive package of tax cuts and breaks, including extensions of soon-to- expire aid for the renewable energy and ethanol industries. Well more than the minimum 60 senators voted in favor of opening debate on the tax- cut package, although Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid opted to hold the vote open longer to allow for senators returning to Washington from the storm-hit Midwest to be counted on the crucial measure.
