Twelve years after the last exploration activity, a rig finally spudded a new wildcat in waters off the disputed Falkland Islands February 22, carrying with it dreams of a major new oil and gas province in the South Atlantic.Already a high-risk endeavor, a political spat over the drilling has focused world attention on the exploration, raising the stakes even further. The Ocean Guardian, a rig owned by Houston-based Diamond Offshore Drilling, arrived at the first drill site in waters to the north of the Falklands three days earlier to begin an expected six-month drilling campaign.
