Canada's Enerplus to pay $406 million for Marcellus acreage

Washington-Calgary-based Enerplus Resources Fund said August 19 it has entered into agreements with three related private natural gas producers to acquire 30% of their interests in the US' Marcellus Shale for $406 million. Enerplus said it struck the deals with Chief Oil & Gas, Chief Exploration & Development and a limited partnership managed by Tug Hill. It said the Chief entities currently own an average 72% working interest in about 540,000 gross acres, most of which are in Pennsylvania, in the heart of the Mar-cellus.
