Ecopetrol hikes 2009 capex 35% to $6.3 billion

Rio de Janeiro—Colombian state oil company Ecopetrol said December 18 that it plans to spend $6.22 billion next year, mostly on exploration and production in Colombia, a 35% rise from 2008 despite the recent plunge in oil prices and product demand. Ecopetrol, in a statement, said it would earmark 60.5% of its capex budget in 2009 to E&P activities, or $3.77 billion, and plans to produce 457,000 b/d of crude in 2009. By 2015, the company said, accelerating invest- ments should allow Ecopetrol to pump 1 mil- lion b/d of oil equivalent.
