Their remarks may have been scripted in London, Houston or Paris but when senior oil executives came to an energy conference in Abu Dhabi last week their remarks converged around a single theme-the short-term pause in global demand growth is temporary and unless barriers to investment in the Middle East's prolific oil basins are removed, the world is headed for future price and supply shocks. That recurring theme was perhaps best summarized by Ryan Lance, exploration chief of the US' ConocoPhillips: "As we have learned from the current economic crisis, we live in a small world. We are interdependent. We need each other. Producing and consuming nations must work together to achieve market stability."
