As companies throughout the world embrace the concept of sustainability, a refined definition of what this term means is beginning to surface. This new definition of sustainable business practice is anchored deep within the firms' business strategy and drives the partnerships, day-to-day operations as well as new areas of capital investment. With global warming challenging industries such as BP to find creative solutions, trust and forthrightness are needed to build and maintain a good reputation with stakeholders. This will deliver tangible results that benefit not only the companies themselves, but also society. The following article is based on a speech that Steve Percy delivered to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in November 1999. In this article, Percy articulates several of the challenges facing industry in the quest to answer the triple bottom line and become environmentally sustainable.
