Though demand in Q3 07 was up on Q2, Japanese cable manufacturers are concerned about the market outlook in view of NTT's revised FTTH strategy. NTT had 7.4 million FTTH subscribers at the end of September 2007, with monthly growth of 250,000. NTT's decision to reduce its longer term FTTH subscriber target from 30 million to 20 million has left a cloud of uncertainty over FTTH development in Japan. No intervention from the Japanese government is expected, as NTT needs to improve its financial performance. NTT is expected to release its business plan for FY2008 in December 2007. As a result of NTT's revised FTTH subscription target, Japanese cable manufacturers are now looking to the alternative carriers to support demand, but, as yet, KDDI and Softbank have not reacted to NTT's announcement.
