The demand for optical cable in Germany was 2.1 million fibre-km in H1 2012, up 29% from 1.7 million km in H1 2011. This growth is partially due to recent progress in FTTH deployments. Like other markets in Europe, Germany's FTTH projects are being developed by a mix of municipalities, power utilities, alternative carriers, and the incumbent telecom operator. In Germany, the incumbent Telekom Deutschland has relied on FTTN and VDSL to provide broadband service for several years. In early 2011, the company said it would step up efforts to deploy FTTH, working with local partners for rightsof-way and joint financing.
