Toray Touts Partially Bio-Based PBT Using Genomatica's 1,4-Butanediol

San Diego-Toray Industries announced that it has successfully produced a partially bio-based polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) using 1,4-butanediol (BDO) made with Genomatica's bio-based process technology (PCN, 18 Feb 2013, p 3). Toray, noting that the bench-level production gives it "a significant boost towards commercial-scale production," said its "tests confirmed that PBT made using this BDO has physical properties and formability equivalent to PBT made from petroleum-derived BDO."
