This is a new edition of a book that was published in 1999 and reviewed in Biometrics in 2000 (pp. 1290-1291). The reviewer found the book well suited for its target audience of students in pharmacy and workers in pharmacy settings, in-cluding,the pharmaceutical industry, offering practical details on a wide range of basic statistical methods. This revision was written partially for updates and corrections, but more importantly to provide even more extensive coverage of statistical methods in common use in pharmaceutical studies and publications. A considerable amount of new material has been added, the selection seemingly driven in part to provide computer software users an explanation of quantities that they are likely to find presented to them in popular statistical software packages. To wit, somewhere on the order of 20 different multiple-comparison methods are described or mentioned, as are a comparable number of measures of association for contingency tables. Other additions include chapters or sections on power and sample size issues for comparing proportions; nonparametric tests; odds ratios and related measurements; sensitivity, specificity, and related topics; survival analysis; and equivalence and noninferiority.
