The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is reconsidering intermediary targets for reducing carbon emissions from power plants, EPA Assistant Administrator Janet McCabe told the US Senate's Environment and Public Works committee on Wednesday (OD Jun.3'14). The agency proposed rules in June that would require states to cut emissions 30% from existing power plants by 2030 over 2005 levels. Intermediary targets vary state-by-state but are set to begin in 2020 -- and in some cases require dramatic cuts. Individual electric utilities and some state governments have said these near-term goals are either too difficult or too costly (OD Jul.29'14).
