Modern Tank Car Spilled Oil in Virginia

The recent derailment and fire of a train carrying crude oil in Lynchburg, Virginia, involved modern tanker cars built to stricter safety standards, according to an official at the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). Of the 13 cars that derailed in Lynchburg, 10 were of the newer design introduced by the railroad industry in October of 2011. At least one of those modern tanker cars ruptured and spilled its cargo, Eric Weiss of the NTSB told Oil Daily on Friday.
