South America’s Guyanas Trend Tests Explorers’ Patience

The Zaedyus discovery made off French Guiana in 2011 by UK independent Tullow Oil raised hopes of further large oil finds in South America’s Guyanas Trend deepwater play. But with recent drilling producing disappointing results, those hopes are starting to dim. While last year saw US firms Chevron and Anadarko acquire interests in the region, in recent months producers seem to be re-evaluating their positions, with both Argentina’s state-controlled YPF and Tullow itself withdrawing from Guyana’s Repsol-operated Georgetown license.
