Crude-by-rail shipments in the US skyrocketed by more than 250% last year to reach record levels, the American Association of Railroads (AAR) said Tuesday. The group said 233,811 carloads of crude oil were shipped in 2012, up from 65,751 in 2011. Each tanker car carries around 720 bbl of crude, depending on the grade, so last year’s shipments amounted to about 460,000 barrels per day.
