Tensions have flared up again in the South China Sea, where China has just staked new claims to two maritime areas lying only 80 kilometers (50 miles) from Palawan province in the Philippines where oil firms carried out exploration earlier this year. The Philippines immediately rejected the claims, saying the exploration areas fall under its jurisdiction and are nowhere near the hotly contested-and potentially resource-rich-Spratly Islands.
