Phobos Could Give Big Boost to Plains E&P's US Gulf Portfolio

Earlier this year Plains Exploration & Production planned to exit the deepwater Gulf of Mexico but was unable to find a buyer for its assets. Today, however, it is pleased to own a piece of the recent Lucius discovery in the Gulf and also excited by its stake in the potentially larger Phobos prospect. Plains holds a 50% stake in Phobos, in the remote Sigsbee Escarpment area of the Gulf of Mexico, and estimates that its share of a discovery would amount to 306 million barrels of oil equivalent. Operator Anadarko holds the remaining 50%.
