Ukraine Says Statoil Eyeing Shale Gas Deposits, Black Sea Shelf

Norway’s Statoil has become the latest inter-national major to throw its hat into the ring fora role in developing Ukraine’s unconventionalgas reserves, according to state-controlledNaftogaz Ukrainy, and it could also draw on itsoffshore experience to work in the Ukrainianand Turkish sectors of the Black Sea.Naftogaz said it discussed cooperatingwith Statoil in exploration and production ofhydrocarbons on the Black Sea shelf and thedevelopment of shale deposits in westernUkraine at the end of May. It said an agree-ment is being drawn up in Statoil’s head-quarters in Stavanger, with reports suggest-ing it could be signed as soon as this month.
