Japan looks set to get its sixth prime minister in five years, after embattled Premier Naoto Kan told the cabinet on Tuesday that he will resign on Friday, paving the way for a successor to be appointed by Aug. 30. Reaffirming the conditions he set in June for his resignation, Kan told ministers that he will quit once parliament passes three bills. One, for a supplementary budget, was enacted last month, while a bill to issue bonds to cover the deficit in fiscal 2011 is expected to be enacted today, and the third, to promote renewable energy, is due by Friday.
