Ankara-based META was the first company to mine nickel in Turkey. META has produced a total of 230,000t of lateritic-type nickel ore from open pits since 2003. META is now committed to investing up to US$700 million to build the first hydrometallurgy processing plant in the country. The first phase consists of US$300 million investment to process 1.5Mt/y of lateritic ore and obtain nickel and cobalt mixed hydroxide product (MHP). The MHP will be equivalent to 10,000t/y nickel metal and 750t/y cobalt. This phase is to be completed by the start of 2014.
