Rio axes Queensland alumina jobs, cuts bauxite production

RIO Tinto will curtail expansion of the Yarwun alumina refinery and reduce production from its Weipa bauxite mine, resulting in the loss of 705 jobs, in response to the drop in the alumina price. The rate of work at Yarwun, in Queensland, will be slowed to reduce capital expenditure. The change of construction schedule will result in completion of the expansion programme in the second half of 2012 and not the second half of 2011, as planned. Annual output at Weipa, also in Queensland, will be cut to15Mt from 19.4 Mt in 2008.
