AS THIS year's Olympic Games track and field programme moves into its final few days, it is probably safe to say that the performances of Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt in the 100 metres and 200 metres will be one of the games' highlights. He ran 9.69 seconds in the 100 metres, shaving three hundreths of a second off his own world record and then completed the 200 metres in 19.30, smashing Michael Johnson's 19.32 world record set in Atlanta in 1996. Twenty years earlier, Ben Johnson of Canada broke the 100 metres world record in the Seoul Olympics with a time of 9.79, only to be disqualified for failing a drugs test.
