Alumina prices rise as idled aluminium output restarts

Alumina prices rose last week on heightened interest from aluminium producers looking at restarting idled production, market participants said. The trading range for free-market alumina rose to 290-300 dollars per tonne on August26 from 260-283 dollars previously, a range that reflected Nalco's August 6 tender and other trades (MB Aug 6). Most aluminium producers cut output at the end of last year due to low demand as a result of the economic downturn, but with prices hovering around 1,900 dollars per tonne on the London Metal Exchange, some are turning on cells gradually, alumina market sources told MB.
