Rio Tinto will sell 15 percent stake in Hamersley Iron to Chinalco

Rio Tinto will give Aluminium Corp of China (Chinalco) a 15 percent stake in its Hamersley iron ore operation as part of a 19.5 billion dollars deal with the Chinese firm, which could boost its stake in Rio to 18 percent and take minority ownership in the group's key operations. Hamersley produced 73 percent of Rio's iron ore last year and is considered a prized asset. Chinalco will invest 12.3 billion dollars in return for shares in the businesses, and will also invest 7.2 billion dollars of convertible bonds.
