Russian steelmaker Severstal is acquiring control of St Petersburg-based scrap merchant Vtorchermet, a spokesman for Severstal Resource told MB. "Vtorchermet, one of the leading scrap processors in northwest Russia, has come under the control of Severstal," the spokesman said, but added: "At this moment in time Severstal is not the formal owner however, it will happen in the near future." According to Severstal, the company operated several scrap processing sites in St Petersburg and the surrounding region, as well as subsidiaries in Rostov-on-Don and Tula. Its sales last year amounted to a total of 1.07 million tonnes "on the growing domestic market" and outside Russia.
