Pangang Chengdu closes urban operations

Chinese steelmaker Pangang Group Chengdu Iron & Steel has closed down all its steelmaking operations in the urban areas of Chengdu as it relocates out of the city. The company, a wholly-owned tubemaking subsidiary of Panzhihua Iron & Steel Group, dosed all the urban facilities in the southwestern Chinese city by the end of 2006, a company official said. Chengdu Steel launched its relocation to the Qingbaijiang district in the northeastern outskirts of Chengdu in June 2002. The relocation is part of the Sichuan provincial government's move to shift heavy industry out of Chengdu city area, in line with similar initiatives being undertaken across China as the country attempts to improve the environment for its growing urban population.
