PITTSBURGH & LONDON -Gerdau Ameristeel last week signed a deal to buy US producer Chaparral Steel for 4.22 billion dollars in a move that will expand its reach into the profitable structural steel sector. Chaparral's board of directors has unanimously approved the 86-dollars-per-share bid and will recommend that shareholders accept the offer, Gerdau Ameristeel said. Chaparral, which has a capacity of 2.9 million tpy, is the second largest producer of structural steel products in North America and also a major producer of bar products, operating two mini-mills, one in Texas and the other in Virginia.
