Alcan and Ghana sign deal to look at bauxite mine and alumina refinery

Alcan and the Republic of Ghana have signed a Memorandum of Understanding for a joint venture that would look at developing a bauxite mine and an alumina refinery in the west African country. Alcan would have a 51-percent stake, and the government a 49-percent stake in the venture. The alumina refinery will have estimated capacity of 1.5-2 million tpy, Alcan said. "Alcan is very pleased to be partnering with Ghana to explore the development of the country's extensive, high-quality bauxite V reserves," said Dick Evans, Alcan president and ceo- said in a statement.
