The halt in production at Zinifex's Century lead and zinc mine in Queensland, Australia, will have its largest impact on smelters in East Asia, with the European market expecting to be largely unscathed by the move, traders said. Although the European market is still starved of concentrate, the cut in output from Zinifex's flagship mine will not affect the majority of the region as Zinifex only sends concentrate to Europe for smelting at its own Budel Zinc smelter in the Netherlands. Sources dose to the Dutch smelter, which has the capacity to produce 212,000 tpy of zinc, told MB they are "very concerned" by the development. But as yet it is still unclear how it will affect business.
