BHP Steel will proceed with the installation of a 175,000 tpy galvanizing and colour-coating line in southern Vietnam after receiving an investment licence from the Vietnamese government. The Australian company will invest around 160 million Australia dollars (103.5 million US dollars) in the plant in Phu My, Ba Ria-Vung Tau province, near Ho Chi Minh City. The line will have capacity to produce 125,000 tpy of galvanized sheet and a further 50,000 tpy of colour-coated sheet. First production is scheduled for early 2006; construction will begin at the end of this year. Most of the new line's output will be consumed by customers in Vietnam, including BHP Steel's own roll-forming plants in Dong Nai province in the south of the country and Ha Tay province in the north. BHP Steel operates similar coating plants in Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia.
