Changzhi appoints SMS Demag as construction of integrated plant moves closer

The planned construction of a new integrated steel plant at China's Changzhi Iron & Steel has moved another step closer following the award of a contract to SMS Demag of Germany for the installation of a 600,000 tpy H-beam mill. The agreement, which was formalised last month in Beijing between representatives of SMS Demag and the company's general manager, Tang Ge, will also cover matters relating to technical know-how, a Changzhi engineer said. He added that the design of the H-beam plant will be undertaken jointly with Changzhi's own engineering arm. Complementing the new 600,000 tpy H-beam mill is the construction of a new 1,080 cu metre blast furnace, an 80-tonne converter and a continuous caster.
