WtE plants rise in waste hierarchy with EC guide

Waste-to-energy (WtE) plants that harness heat as well as producing electricity have been classified as 'energy recovery' rather than 'waste disposal' in European Commission guidelines. On 1 July, the Commission published a guide to the energy efficiency formula known as Rl for thermal WtE facilities. Plants that provide electricity to the local community and industry, and harness heat produced in the process, will be placed under 'energy recovery'.
