U.S. lawmakers urge Korea to allow entry of processed organic products

The Republic of Korea intends to close its borders to U.S. organic processed foods starting Jan. 1, 2014 unless they are certified by an accredited entity. The ban on uncertified U.S. organic products is the result of a May 2012 Korean law - the Act on Promotion of Eco-Friendly Agriculture and Management of Organic Products - which required all organic food products sold in the country to be certified by bodies accredited by the Korean Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs (MAFRA). U.S. organic exporters won a grace period for compliance, but that will expire on Dec. 31.
