To overcome all of the confusing noise about overlapping food recalls the FDA should hire a single trusted spokesperson, suggested several members of the agency's Risk Communication Advisory Committee Tuesday. The group of 15 risk communication experts, including academics and private sector specialists appointed by the FDA, met at the agency's headquarters, in White Oak, Md. to talk about new ways to keep consumers from tuning out of repeated food recall messages. As explained by Serena Lo,an FDA consumer specialist, at the beginning of the all-day event, the agency is anticipating problems in reaching consumers with important health messages as technology advances are likely to detect more food safety problems and the agency announces simultaneous product recalls and, in some cases, multiple recalls for the same food.
