2008 Farm Bill expiration threatens current and emerging agriculture programs

As a result of the 2008 Farm Bill expiring last week, dairy farmers are no longer covered by the Milk Income Loss Contract program, which compensates them when domestic milk prices fall below a specified level. Without a new Farm Bill, they're left with uncertainty and inadequate assistance, the National Milk Producers Federation and allied agriculture groups say. While milk prices are high enough, the price support program doesn't kick in. Unfortunately, there isn't another safety net to help dairy farmers battle the highest feed costs on record.
