Consumers pelt IDFA,NMPF petition to change standard of identity for milk

Judging by the 40,651 comments FDA has received on its four-year-old petition to allow non-nutritive sweeteners in milk and 17 other dairy products, a large number of Americans don't want aspartame in their chocolate milk. The International Dairy Foods Association (IDEA) and the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) probably didn't expect the firestorm of a reaction they got to the petition they filed with the FDA back in 2009 to eliminate a requirement that milk and other dairy products be labeled as "reduced calorie" when they contain aspartame or other artificial sweeteners. The FDA published the petition in the Federal Register on Feb. 20-four years later-opening a 90-day comment period that ended at midnight Tuesday.
