As almost anyone can discern by scanning the food industry trade press or newspapers, lawsuits against food companies are on the rise. Most of these are class action lawsuits filed by plaintiff's attorneys in states with strong consumer protection laws, such as California. The majority of the lawsuits take the position that the claims or representations being made on the food label mislead the consumer into purchasing the product.
