France set to ban BPA in food contact materials

France is on course to ban bisphenol A (BPA) in food contact materials, after the National Assembly, the French lower chamber, voted to approve a bill in its second reading Nov. 28, EU Food Law reports. Provided the Senate also approves the bill - and there is every likelihood that it will - the restrictions would apply early next year to products intended to come into direct contact with foods for children up to the age of three. The ban would then be extended to all BPA-based food contact packaging in France beginning Jan. 1, 2015.
