FSIS publishes SIP notice, will require plant using waivers to join program

Any plant operating under a waiver from USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service as part of the Salmonella Initiative Program (SIP) has until Nov. 10 to start participating in SIP and agree to the increased levels of microbial testing required therein, FSIS says in a 39-page Federal Register notice published Wednesday (www.ofr gov/OFRUploadJOFRData/2011-17625_ PI.pdf). Some plants operating under waivers granted prior to SIP's introduction, such as waivers for the HACCP-Based Inspection Models Project and online reprocessing, had not been required to submit the same daily Salmonella testing data mandated by SIP, an FSIS spokesman explains. But under the new notice, these plants will either have to join SIP or revert to standard inspection practices .
