Industry trade associations and others fighting to block import re-inspection fees that FDA had planned to start collecting Oct. 1 appear to have gotten a reprieve for now, reveals an FDA guidance document issued Sept. 30.FDA was authorized by Congress to collect new fees to help shoulder the costs of implementing the massive FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). On Aug. 1, the agency announced the reimbursement price for its services: $325 an hour for inspectors who must travel out of the country and $224/hour when no foreign travel applies. The fees apply to three situations: domestic/foreign facility re-inspections; recall order non-compliance; and re-inspections of imports presented at U.S. ports.
