The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service announcement on Aug. 23 of a 380,000 pound recall of deli meats by Zemco Industries, a Buffalo, N.Y.-based firm, over Listeria monocytogenes concerns, actually involves two larger companies, Food Chemical News has learned.Zemco is owned by Tyson Foods Inc., which added the company to its holdings when it acquired IBP in 2001, Gary Mickelson, a spokesman for Tyson Foods Inc., confirms. The recalled ham, roast beef, salami and other meats were distributed solely to Walmart stores with the intention of being sold in prepackaged sandwiches, he says.
