Chilean salmon virus scare prompts regulatory review

Chile's salmon industry is still recovering from a devastating virus outbreak in 2007, and recent confirmation of another viral disease in salmon farms is forcing industry leaders and federal regulators to consider preventive strategies once again.The results of a sanitation study of Chile's fresh and salt water aquaculture projects published early this month confirms the fears of all parties by revealing the presence of the Piscine Reovirus (PRV) at 10 salmon aquaculture projects in the Los Lagos region. PRV has been proven to cause fatal heart and skeletal muscle inflammation in salmon and other fish species.
