EFSA could beef up scientific staff to ensure independence

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) could increase its scientific staff and rely less on outside experts to ensure that the agency is seen as independent, Executive Director Catherine Geslain-Laneelle told a Stakeholder Consultative Platform meeting last month. The EFSA chief stressed that this change would be costly. She told the Platform that "the system now where we rely a lot on external experts is extremely cheap," compared with a system using internal experts.
