House members askVilsack to allow RR alfalfa planting this fall

Some 75 House members, including Agriculture Committee Chairman Collin Peterson (D-Minn.) and ranking member Frank Lucas (R-Okla.), have asked Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack to issue an interim permit allowing cultivation of Roundup Ready alfalfa this fall.The Supreme Court on June 21 lifted an injunction banning cultivation of RR alfalfa and remanded the case back to the Ninth District Court in San Francisco (see FCN June 28, Page 1). Depending on the district court's decision, USDA can decide what interim measures may be implemented while the agency completes its Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).
