Argentina's seed protocol paves the way for new GE soybeans

Argentina's soybean producers and exporters scored a victory last month when the agriculture ministry published a protocol allowing production of transgenic soybean seeds not yet approved for domestic commercialization but destined for foreign markets. "Authorizations will be granted for limited periods of time, and the land area approved for this purpose can progressively increase as long as producers can prove that adequate inspection and control measures are in place," says Agriculture Ministry Resolution 400/10. Published in Argentina's equivalent of the Federal Register, the resolution tasks the National Advisory Commission for Agricultural Biotechnology with evaluating and either approving or disapproving petitions for planting seeds covered under the protocol.
