FDA-Industry prefers Senate compromise version of S 510, but questions remain

Many food industry groups say they got the fixes they were looking for in the Aug. 12 compromise food safety legislation forged in the Senate. But a few more tweaks need to be made, some say.Six senators, including three Democrats and three Republicans, late last month approved a 225-page manager's amendment that revised major provisions of the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (S 510),the bill approved earlier by the Senate Health,Education, Labor and Pensions Committee (see FCN Aug. 16, Page 1). As before, the revised bill would require food companies - not restaurants and farms - to write risk-based preventive controls to address hazards and allow FDA access to these plans. FDA would require importers to certify as safe high-risk foods or be denied entry to the United States. It would require FDA to inspect food facilities more frequently.
