Green light for Ekofisk upgrade

The Norwegian Energy Ministry has given the green light for construction of a new US $1.7 Bn accommodation platform for the Ekofisk field. The accommodation platform, which will be able to house 552 workers, is one of several developments planned for Ekofisk, the Ministry in a statement. Two further platforms are currently being considered for the field with plans for them set to be unveiled next year. The minister for petroleum and energy, Terje Riis-Johansen, said: "I am pleased to say that several major projects are planned in the Ekofisk area in the future. This paves the way for production from the Ekofisk area for another 40 years. The development of the field will provide substantial tax revenues and supply the industry with many new important contracts." ConocoPhillips is the operator of Production Licence 018 which includes Ekofisk. The new flotel will replace the existing accommodation platforms at the Ekofisk centre.
