Lifting the de facto ban on crude oil exports could earn the US about $15 billion by 2017 and help sustain the country's shale boom, according to the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR). In a paper entitled The Case For Allowing US Crude Oil Exports, the CFR's energy and national security fellow Blake Clayton argues that a law requiring companies to seek a permit for crude exports is outdated and a threat to economic growth.
