PetroChina Marks a First by Wholly Owning Oil Sands Project

PetroChina has stepped up its investment in Canada’s oil industry by snapping up the remaining 40% interest it does not already own in the MacKay River oil sands project in a C$680 million (US$673 million) deal with Athabasca Oil Sands. The landmark deal for one of Alberta’s newest oil sands projects represents the first wholly-owned oil sands project by a statecontrolled Chinese company. Furthermore, it could also mark an important step in the Canadian government’s plan to develop new markets in Asia for the country’s burgeoning oil sands production.
