Undercutting Australian LNG producers' argument that the carbon tax of A$23 (US$24.60) proposed to take effect next July will put them at a competitive disadvantage, an Australian public policy think tank says the impact will be limited, and that handing the LNG industry free carbon permits would transfer the cost of cutting emissions to the rest of the community.
