Bahrain's King Hamad went on television Tuesday to announce an investigation into the deaths of two protesters killed in clashes with security forces, but the efforts have done little to ease tensions (IOD Feb.15,p1) The security forces used tear gas and pellet guns on Monday and Tuesday to control crowds calling for reforms and for the prime minister to step down, killing one protestor on Tuesday as he took part in the funeral procession of another. The prime minister, who is a member of the ruling family, has been in power for nearly 40 years.
